We are afraid of the wrong things.

FEAR!!! Is a word that has the ability to take our breath away, tie our tongues and shock our systems and sometimes leads to a heart attack. Safety and security is always a preferred choice because no one wants to live in fear.

We learn about fear throughout our life journey- whether by experiencing traumatic events ourselves or even seeing fear in others. South Africa is a nation where fear has been carefully instilled into our every being. In each and everyday of our lives we read papers, watch news, TV or movies all expressing fear in some form or another. We fear failure, rejection, being alone, intimacy, “what the people might say”, death and ultimately life.

A large majority of people believe in some sort of God or religious setting that should comfort them not to fear, but yet we fear. In some religions there is a heaven or promise of another life better than the one we live currently on earth.  Yet those same believers who are passionate about their religion fear death. As a religious person why should you fear death if you are promised something better after death. For example Christians are promised a better life by their Creator when the Messiah returns, but most Christians live in fear of dying.
As human beings we spend too much of our energy sometimes being afraid of the wrong things. We should live our lives more like Muslim bombing extremists who fear nothing and explore life to the fullest.

  1. Sorry LT, I'm not willing to strap bomb on my body to show that I'm fearless. I think fear is part of life, but it should not cripple you. Fear helps to keep order, how many people would be criminals if they thought prison was a fun place to be? We have less criminals because people have been warned on prison life...me being one of them.
